Picture this: a quaint farm situated on gently rolling
hills in the midst of cottage country, where visitors are
greeted by perhaps Petunia, the pot-bellied pig or Geronimo,
the miniature horse who thinks he’s a dog, or Tinsel, the
little black goat, or one of the over 150 animals who freely
roam the grounds (including horses, donkeys, rabbits, deer,
pigmy goats, llamas, alpacas, several varieties of ducks and
chickens, geese, doves, pigeons, swans and peacocks). Listen
to the laughter and excited chatter of young and old
children who are absolutely transfixed by their
surroundings.
Sharron Smith and David Rome opened Santa’s Farm in 1998,
They envisioned a place where children could interact freely
and safely with domestic animals and wildlife in a natural
and non-commercial setting. Their goal was to advance the
education and development of children by instructing them
about the care, protection and appreciation of animals.
There’s more than nostalgia at work here as some of our
heritage animals are on the endangered list such as
Sebastopol Geese, Navaho Sheep and Cochin chickens. In
addition, they wanted to provide therapeutic activities for
children restricted by physical and mental disabilities
through interaction and engagement with the animals at the
Farm.
